Where is the Okanagan Valley?
The Okanagan Valley is located in southern British Columbia, about 400 km east of Vancouver. The region around Okanagan Lake, with cities like Kelowna, Penticton, and Oliver, is known for its warm, sunny climate – boasting more sunshine hours than many parts of California.
A Paradise for Wine Lovers
The Okanagan Valley is the heart of Canadian wine production. Varieties such as Pinot Gris, Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Syrah thrive on volcanic soils with ideal slopes.
Today, there are over 300 wineries, many of them family-run, organic, or innovative in cellar techniques. Whether tasting on a vineyard terrace with lake views or visiting a boutique winery, the combination of quality, landscape, and hospitality is truly unique.
Peaches, Apricots & Rainier Cherries
The Okanagan is famous not only for its wine but also for its spectacular fruit orchards. In the summer months, the region is a true fruit paradise:
- Peaches: Juicy, sweet, and available fresh from late July to early September
- Rainier Cherries: Large, bi-colored sweet cherries with a delicate aroma – almost unknown in Germany
- Apricots, nectarines, pears, apples & berries: The list is long and delicious
At the many farm markets or roadside fruit stands, you can buy products fresh from the grower – often with a friendly chat with the farmers.
